Australia increases spending on culture

Australia's government is spending 2.6 per cent more on cultural pursuits this year.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released new figures showing total government spending on cultural activities has increased.
Our reporter Antonette Collins says the statistics calculate spending by Federal, State and Local governments on arts and heritage related activities.
A total of $US5.1 billion was spent on cultural pursuits in 2006-2007 - an increase of 2.6 per cent on the previous year.
The Federal Government's contribution did not change, while the states and territories increased their funding by 2.3 per cent.
With over $US1.09 billion dollars, broadcasting and film is the biggest recipient of Commonwealth funding while cultural administration, literature and print media saw a marked decrease.
Nature parks and reserves recorded the largest increase of funding from the states to the tune of $85 million, followed by the performing arts which gained an extra $US46.4 million.
