Australians urged to reconsider Mauritania travel
Updated
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs has increased its travel warning for Mauritania because of a military coup against the President.
Soldiers in the north-west African country have overthrown the nation's first democratically elected President in a bloodless coup.
The Department says Australians should reconsider their need to travel to Mauritania.
And it's warning that people should not travel to the areas which border Mali and Algeria, because of the risks of banditry and the activities of armed smugglers and extremist groups.
