Anti-China protests in Nepal, India

Thousands of Tibetan exiles have held fresh demonstrations in Nepal and India, demanding religious rights and saying China should not be allowed to host the Olympics while its rule over their homeland continues.

In the Nepali capital Kathmandu, police broke up a demonstration of around 2,000 Tibetans, including monks, nuns and schoolchildren.

The demonstrators threw rocks at police, who retaliated with batons, before arresting nearly 600 people.

In India, paramilitary forces put roadblocks around the Chinese embassy, as protestors marched through the city calling for an independent Tibet.

Indian-born protester Tashi Tesering says China has done nothing to improve its human rights record in Tibet.

"Because of the Olympic Games, they are going to change to better human rights and something in Tibet. But no, they are just liars," he said.
