Solomons 'short of dozens of doctors'

Solomon Islands Health minister Johnson Koli says the country is short of dozens of doctors, while a third of the nation's qualified medical practioners are working abroad.

He's told parliament, Solomon Islands hospitals need at least 74 doctors, and are 39 short.

The main national referral hospital is said to working at almost half strength.

However, the health minister says Solomons has 25 trainee doctors in Cuba under a Cuban scholarship scheme.

A similar number will be sent later.

However Solomon Islands national broadcaster, SIBC, says Mr Koli has confirmed that two Cuban doctors are now in the country, with another eight set to arrive.
