Guantanamo tribunal sentences Osama bin Laden's driver

Osama Bin Laden's former driver will remain in prison at Guantanamo Bay indefinitely, even though he's eligible for release in about six months.

Our Washington correspondent Kim Landers reports Salim Hamdan had faced a maximum of life in prison and prosecutors had asked for 30 years.

Instead a military jury has sentenced him to five-and-a-half years in prison after convicting him of supporting terrorism.

Taking into account the time Hamdan has already served, the Yemeni national would be eligible for release in about six months. But he hasn't received credit for the time between his capture in Afghanistan in late 2001 and when he was charged by the US in 2003.

Earlier this week the Pentagon made it clear that regardless of the sentence the US has the right to detain Salim Hamdan indefinitely.
