Australia's prime minister has paid respects to Australian war dead at the United Nations war cemetery in South Korea.

The cemetery was his first stop on a brief visit to Korea.

After celebrations of Beijing, the prime minister arrived in the port city of Pusan late yesterday with a far more solemn duty - visiting the graves of more than 280 Australian servicemen who died in the Korean War.

After paying his respects, Mr Rudd flew into Seoul, where he was greeted by a guard of honour.

The Prime Minister is due to hold separate meetings with both the Korean president and prime minister. It is expected the talks will include discussion of a free trade areement between Australia and Korea, and what the two countries can do to tackle climate change.

Mr Rudd's will also give a speech to a business group in Seoul this evening, and then depart for Singapore.
