Tonga win international health award

Tonga has received an international award for a health initative to prevent heart disease.

A program set up by Tonga's only paediatrician, Dr Toakase Fakakovikaetau, screens primary school children for heart disease and provides early treatment.

Pacnews reports Dr Fakakovikaetau will be presented with the 2008 Louise Lown Heart Hero Award.

Tonga won the award ahead of 13 other nations.

A recent study found Tonga has the highest incidence of rheumatic heart disease in the world.
