Australian forces nab Taliban leader
Updated
A senior Taliban leader has been captured by Australian troops in Aghanistan.
Radio Australia's Michael Cavanagh reports Mullah Bari Ghul is being held at a Dutch-run prison while authorities negotiate where he will be held in the future.
Australian forces claim the capture of the man known as the Shadow Governor in the country's south will have an immediate disruptive effect on extremists operating the Oruzgan province.
He is regarded as being responsible for a campaign of intimidation and violence.
Australian Brigadier Brian Dawson, says the Taliban extremist also authorised the use of improvised explosive devices which were used in attacks that killed several Australian soldiers and also a suicide bombing in July which left 21 people dead at a local market.
