Violence in Sri Lanka's north

Sri Lankan security forces have killed 26 Tamil Tiger rebels and lost 6 of their own soldiers, in the latest fighting in the north of the island.

The military says troops have pushed into territory held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on at least three fronts in Wanni region.

They say 20 government troops were wounded in fighting on Monday.

There has been no immediate confirmation from the rebels on numbers of dead and injured.
