UN says Nepal urgently needs food air

The United Nations World Food Program says 2.5 million people in Nepal urgently need food aid, and says it's only currently meeting the needs of 50,000 of the hungry.

The WFP's office in Kathmandu says nine districts in western Nepal have suffered severe drought this year, causing up to 80 percent of the crop to fail.

It says the problem has been made worse by rising food prices.

The WFP has announced relief aid worth nearly a quarter of a million US dollars to ease problems caused by rising food and food prices in 16 countries, including Nepal.
