Zimbabwe opposition leader promises cooperation with Mugabe

Zimbabwe's opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, says he is committed to reaching a power-sharing agreement with the president, Robert Mugabe, despite walking out of talks with him.

Africa correspondent, Andrew Geoghegan, reports negotiations have been adjourned while Mr Tsvangirai considers his position.

As the mediator of Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks, South African president, Thabo Mbeki, is remaining optimistic.

He has, however, acknowledged that there is disagreement over who should lead Zimbabwe.

Opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, abandoned the negotiations on Tuesday.

He has since committed to reaching a solution to Zimbabwe's political crisis, but maintains that a power-sharing agreement should reflect the results of the March election, which he won.

In an email to his supporters, he says he would not betray them.

In other words, he wants to lead a unity government, while calling on Robert Mugabe to accept a ceremonial role.
