Grcocery prices higher off Australia's northern coast: Survey

Australian Liberal senator, Sue Boyce, is calling for a senate inquiry into the cost of living in the Torres Strait, off northern Australia.

A survey conducted by the Senator shows a basket of basic grocery items can cost about $AUS90 on Thursday Island compared with $AUS64 on the mainland.

Senator Boyce says she will lobby for the inquiry when the Senate sits later this month.

"It's a pretty complex issue. Obviously they're desperately affected by freight and it was put to me by Mayor Fred Gela and Mayor Pedro Stephens that there could very well be a case for a freight subsidy to the Torres Strait in the same way that we provide subsidies for Tasmania."
