The Sri Lankan army says some 50 Tamil Tiger fighters and 7 soldiers were killed when troops successfully captured a massive training base for the rebels.

A military spokesman said the complex in Mullaitivu district had a hundred underground bunkers.

The offensive is part of a continued push into rebel strongholds in the north and comes just days after the military claimed it had captured the rebel administrative hub of Kilinochchi.

Sri Lanka's government is pursuing a strategy to gradually retake the rebels' northern stronghold and win the 25-year civil war that has killed more than 70,000 people.
