Afghans shift indepenence celebration to secret venue
Updated
Afghanistan has changed the venue for its independence celebration on Monday to an undisclosed location.
Defence ministry spokesman Zaher Azimi says it has been changed in order not to cause disruption in the traffic and people's movement.
But Afghanistan has seen an upsurge of violence since 2006, with the President, Hamid Karzai, surviving an assassination attempt during a military parade in April.
The Taliban militants have scoffed at the government's independence plans, saying the country is under foreign occupation and that its campaign would continue until the withdrawal of all foreign forces.
Previous independence celebrations were held in the presence of top government officials and foreign military commanders as well as diplomats.
