Police in Bangladesh have launched a special intelligence unit to monitor the activities of political parties.

Police commissioner Naim Ahmed says the unit will track the parties' operations, and ensure a 'peaceful public life.'

The two largest parties in Bangladesh have been increasing pressure on the military-backed interim government to lift emergency powers.

The interim government has detained nearly 170 key political figures since it took control in January last year.
