Security in the Afghan capital Kabul has been stepped up amid fears of an insurgent attack on Independence Day.

President Hamid Karzai has called off his traditional Independence Day address and United Nations staff have been told to work from home.

Police have set up checkpoints at most intersections in the city and main entry points into the capital.

The AFP newsagency reports few people are on the streets for the public holiday.
