Seven people have been killed and one person has been reported missing in the onslaught of typhoon Nuri in the northern Philippines.

Radio Australia's Shirley Escalante reports thousands of people have been affected by flooding and landslides in the northern Philippine region due to continuous rains and strong winds.

Officials say 1,300 families have been evacuated in at least two northern provinces.

The casualty count is expected to rise as assessment teams were deployed from the capital Manila to check on the situation in the north.

Relief goods have been sent from the capital.

Domestic flights and sea travel have been suspended in the north while many roads have also been blocked by landslides.

Typhoon Nuri, with strongest winds at 170 kilometers an hour, is expected to leave the Philippines on Thursday.
