Two Chinese women have been sentence to one year's "re-education" for applying to protest at the Olympic Games, according to human rights groups.

China correspondent, Stephen McDonell, reports Wu Dianyuan and Wang Xiuying used to be neighbours until they were evicted from their homes to make way for development.

They have reportedly applied five times for permission to demonstrate at one of the specially-designated Olympic "protest parks".

They have not only been denied a permit but, according to the group Human Rights In China, the two women have been sentenced to a year's "Re-education through labour" for "disturbing the public order".

It is believed they will serve their sentences outside a labour camp.

No protests have been authorized to go ahead during the Olympics despite dozens of applications.
