Military exercise could jeopordise nuclear disarmament: NKorea

North Korea says a major US-South Korean military exercise could impede progress on an international nuclear disarmament deal.

Seoul and Washington say the annual exercise which began on Monday is purely defensive but Pyongyang says it is aimed at starting a new war on the peninsula.

North Korea says so long as the US and its allies pose military threats, Pyongyang needs to be vigilant against unjust demands made on the verification of its nuclear program.

The US and North Korea cannot agree on ways to verify the nuclear declaration which the North submitted in June as part of a six-nation disarmament deal.
