The UN World Food Programme says it will deliver additional food aid to about 60,000 people displaced by a recent flare-up of Muslim separatist violence in the southern Philippines.

Internally displaced people in the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte will receive 250 tonnes of rice.

The increase in violence started when Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels attacked a military convoy on Sunday, killing seven government troops.

Earlier the WFP had airlifted 400 tons of rice for about 160,000 Christians who were displaced by the rebels who looted, burnt and occupied 13 villages in North Cotabato province.
