Perilya mine cuts 400 jobs

More than 400 jobs are to be cut at Broken Hill's major lead and zinc mine in New South Wales' far west.

Perilya says it made the decision to resize its operation in light of the current low metal prices.

In a statement to the stock exchange, the company says the operation will now focus on a lower production at its Southern Operation.

Perilya spokesman Paul Arndt says he's aware the change will have a major impact on the town, but it will help to keep the operation economically viable.

"We're actually seeking to preserve the asset so we would be able to ramp up at any point in that time if we got a significant change in metal price," Mr Arndt said.
