The Philippine government has scrapped its controversial peace agreement with the country's Muslim minority after two weeks of deadly clashes in the south.
A presidential spokesperson says the cancellation of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain is a painful step, but adds President Gloria Arroyo would seek a new peace deal that would not be opposed by the Christians.
The agreement, signed last month between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation front called for the establishment of a Muslim homeland in the southern island of Mindanao.
Politicians branded it unconstitutional, while Christians living in Mindanao took to the streets in protest branding the agreement as a 'sell out'.
President Arroyo will now seek a new agreement within the boundaries of the constitution.
