Business lobbies for changes to Australian emissions scheme
Updated
The Business Council of Australia is lobbying the Australian government to change its proposed emissions trading scheme because of the cost to the economy.
The council says the proposed compensation for 'trade exposed' businesses will not be enough to stop many of them moving offshore.
The council's Greg Gailey says he wants to work with the government to get around the adverse consequences.
"We are trying to be constructive and ... we have put forward some recommendations in the paper as to how we think you could obviate the adverse implications of the scheme," he says.
"We think (the adverse implications) are unintended.
"The government didn't design the scheme to achieve this outcome."
