Immigrants contribute millions to Australian economy: Report
Updated
The Australian government has released a report showing new immigrants deliver hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy each year.
The report, compiled by Access Economics, estimates the 2007-08 migration program will bring a net benefit of $US536 million dollars.
The paper compares costs that migrants impose on local services such as health and education to money earned through taxation.
Immigation minister, Chris Evans, says the figures support anecdotal evidence.
"It shows that migration is providing a huge boost to the bottom line of our budget, not only to the Australian Government's taxation revenue, but the economy more generally.
