Tougher rules for Bangladesh polls

Stringent new rules aimed at making parliamentary elections due in December free, fair and credible have come into effect in Bangladesh.

The rules were framed by the Election Commission and approved by the military backed interim government last month.

They include mandatory registration of political parties and a ban on their on their powerful student and labour front organisations.

Parliamentary candidates now can only contest a maximum of three seats simultaneously, instead of five.
