Western Australian premier pledges uranium ban

The Premier of Western Australia, Alan Carpenter, has promised to introduce legislation to ban uranium mining if he wins the upcoming state election.

Our reporter Rebecca Carmody says the premier has maintained that legislation wasn't necessary, that the Government's word was enough.

However, Mr Carpenter has now acknowledged a law is needed.

"Well I've been convinced that we have to put this issue beyond doubt."

The former Labor premier Geoff Gallop promised to do exactly the same.

Greens MP Giz Watson has welcomed the move.

"It seems like the premier's finally seen the light on this issue."

The government would be unlikely to get its legislation through the Upper House before May next year, because the Independent MP Shelley Archer holds the balance of power and supports uranium mining.
