Australian state considers junk food advertisement ban

Junk food ads on television could be banned during children's viewing times in Australia's northeastern state of Queensland.

The State Government will release a discussion paper - as part of a wider new health plan - which also covers mental health care and indigenous medical services.

The Premier Anna Bligh has told Parliament that she has legal advice showing the state can act on junk food ads without waiting for federal laws.

"It is not that long ago that our community recognised the dangers of cigarette advertising and cigarette sponsorship of sport. when that was first contemplated, it seemed unrealistic, far fetched and unachievable. But as a community we have successfully consigned it to the past. Let's do the same Mr speaker with the advertising assault on our children."
