Evidence of extensive copper deposits, stretching across 300 kilometres has been found in the south-eastern Australian state of Victoria.

The study by the state government funded minerals exploration agency, GeoScience Victoria discovered them in the state's western district.

Geoscience Director Kathy Hill, says the deposits reach the South Australian border.

"It's the right geological neighbourhood," she said.

"It's the type of rocks that actually do host copper and we see the trend along the geology extending about 300 kilometres from Hamilton, north, right up to the border."
