Fiji to vaccinate girls against cervical cancer

In Fiji, all girls aged between nine and 12 years of age, will be vaccinated in an attempt to reduce the threat of cervical cancer.

Cabinet has approved a vaccination program using the new drug Gardasil, which fights the human papilloma virus.

Fiji's health minister Dr Jiko Luveni, has told the Fiji Times cervical cancer accounts for 14 per cent of all female cancer related deaths in the country.

He says he expects to see reductions in rates of cervical cancer by 60 to 70 per cent in the coming years, with the introduction of the vaccine.
