Solomons moves to create truth, reconciliation body
Updated
The Solomon Islands government has moved a step closer to setting up a truth and reconciliation commission.
It's tabled a bill in parliament which outlines the commission's powers to investigate human rights violations, committed during a violent period of ethnic tension in the country between 1998 and 2001.
The peace and national reconciliation minister, Sam Iduri says the commission will be a forum for victims of human rights abuse to share their experiences.
"What makes this bill so important is our commitment to prevent those terrible events from happening again. Persons were mistreated, harassed, abducted, and women raped with violation of human rights and the commission of heinous crimes which our country is still struggling to address eight years on."
