NZ academic probes community value of PNG mining

A New Zealand scientist will use a government research grant to see if mining companies in Papua New Guinea contribute to local communities.

Massey University Associate Professor, Glen Banks, will work with researchers from the University of PNG.

Dr Banks says all mining companies in PNG have community development programs, but it's hard to tell if they actually work.

"There's been very little evaluation done of those community development programs, so I want to look at how effective the programs are, and what sorts of evaluation internally the companies carry out."

Another New Zealand academic has won a grant to research tourism's effects on poverty, in Fiji and Vanuatu.
