Woodside threatens cutback to West Australian gas project

There's doubt over the future of another West Australian gas project with Australia's oil and gas exploration company Woodside threatening to cut back spending on a gas resource off the Kimberley.

Woodside may have posted a half year profit of more than a billion dollars on Wednesday but it says the Federal Government's draft emissions trading scheme will have a serious impact on its carbon intensive Browse Basin project.

Mr Voelte says Woodside and its partners have spent half a billion dollars on appraising Browse and that rate of spending may be cut back next year.

"Step back, take a deep breath, everybody work together and get something that works for this country, something that doesn't damage the economy," he said.

It's the second gas project in WA to face an uncertain future, with sources close to the Japanese group Inpex signalling the company has chosen Darwin as its preferred site to build a $US8.6 billion LNG operation.
