Reports PNG nickel mine disrupted
Updated
Police reinforcements have been sent to protect the Chinese-backed Ramu Nickel Mine in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province.
The mine has been closed after three Chinese employees were injured in an attack by landowners.
They are said to be angry over a long delay in reviewing a mining agreement with the government and the Chinese developers.
Madang Police Commander, Anthony Wagambie, has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program officers at the scene fired shots to restore order.
"Fortunately we had a couple of police there at a police post close by who were at the mine, and they managed to stop the beating and they discharged their firearms to disperse the crowd," he said.
