Calls for stronger child protection laws in South Asia

The international watchdog for the protection of children wants laws strengthened in South Asia to stop the trafficking of children.

Michael Coggan reports, an estimated 600,000 children are trafficked worldwide.

The South Asia director of the United Nations Children's Fund, Daniel Toole, says a new report sounds an alarm about children being trafficked in the region for sexual exploitation and for labour.

The UNICEF report released in Nepal on Wednesday shows children are being sent to countries in Europe, the Gulf and East Asia, as well as being transported illegally between South Asian countries.

Mr Toole says governments in the region are engaged but the laws aren't sufficient.

The Queensland government is continuing an investigation into allegations a child adopted by an Australian family was kidnapped from a family in India.
