Sports commissioner backs lottery fundraising

The outgoing head of the Australian Sports Commission, Mark Peters, says he supports the idea of a national lottery to boost funding for sport.

The National lottery in the UK generated millions of extra dollars for the British Olympic team, which subsequently increased its medal haul at the Beijing Games.

Peters says new sources of funding have to be found for Australian sport.

"Well it would certainly help all of us in terms of writing less submissions to governemnt, but I can understand why state treasury's and that oppose it," he said.

"I think it would be an ideal solution to at least know the bucket of money we've got available, rather than fighting each year for every dollar."
