Air Vanuatu is expected to launch a second weekly direct service to the southern Australian city of Melbourne by December.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reports the airline says the new service is in response to growing demand from Australian travellers.

It says travel on Air Vanuatu from Australia has grown 10 per cent, and the figures from Melbourne are especially good.

The airline will also take delivery of a new ATR -72 by mid next year, boosting capacity by more than 50 per cent.

Australia makes up about 60 per cent of Air Vanuatu's passenger numbers.
