Bus explodes in southern Philippines

The Philippine military says at least five people have been killed and about 30 others injured when a powerful bomb exploded in a bus terminal in the southern province of Davao del Sur.

Our reporter in Manila, Shirley Escalante, says the owner of the passenger bus has blamed extortionists for the bombing, as police began their probe on the incident.

The bus owner says this was the second Metro Shuttle Bus bombed in three months.

The earlier bombing has largely been blamed on the Al-Khobar Gang which is composed of Filipino terrorists and Muslim rebels trained by the Jemaah Islamiyah.

Security in the province has been tightened and checkpoints have been established.

Officials have warned of possible attacks even during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan by separatists who are on the run from a military offensive in the south.
