EU Russia relations at 'crossroads'

Europe has warned Russia that relations between the two sides are at a "crossroads" because of the Georgian conflict.

Europe depends on Russia for more than one-third of its oil and 40 per cent of its natural gas.

The 27 leaders held the EU's first emergency meeting in five years to discuss how to send a strong message to Moscow after its invasion of Georgia, without isolating the continent's major energy supplier.

The leaders agreed to call off talks with Moscow due later this month on a trade deal unless Russia pulls its troops out of Georgia.

The summit also agreed to re-examine the EU's relationship with Russia.

The President of the EU, France's Nicholas Sarcozy will travel to Moscow next week for talks with the Russian leadership.
