Internet speeds boosted in French Pacific

The French Pacific territory of New Caledonia can look forward to faster internet access, after the official commissioning this week of an undersea fibre optic cable.

Oceania Flash reports the two thousand kilometre cable links the French Pacific territory to the eastern Australian city of Sydney.

The cable was installed earlier this year by a French company, and is expected to give an alternative to New Caledonia's existing satellite-only internet connections.

In French Polynesia, local authorities are considering a similar cable link to Hawaii, expected to cost around one hundred and twenty two million U-S dollars.

And the third French Pacific territory, Wallis and Futuna, last week announced its own domain name of dot WF.
