Philippines militant target mining truck

Communist insurgents have set fire to a mining company truck and taken three policemen hostage in the southern Philippines.

A military spokesman says the New People's Army rebels blocked the road on Mount Diwata and stopped the truck carrying the policemen.

He says the rebels have taken the policemen to an undisclosed location.

The military claims the incident is part of the insurgents' efforts to extort money from mining firms operating in the area.

The policemen were on the truck to provide security from rebel attacks.
