Greenpeace activists have stormed on board a logging ship at a port in Papua New Guinea, preventing stevedores from loading logs bound for China.

PNG correspondent Steve Marshall reports from the Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, in a remote inlet on the Papua New Guinea south coast, four Greenpeace activists boarded the Harbour Gemini at Paia port.

The activists hoisted themselves up the ships crane, preventing it loading logs taken from one of PNG's largest forestry concessions.

Greenpeace says the ship is working for Malaysian logging giant Rimbunan Hijau and accuses the company of breaking PNG forestry laws.

Local resource owners asked Greenpeace to help them publicise their concerns with the logging operation on their land.
