Northern Marianas considers overseas help over electricity crisis

The Northern Marianas might turn to neighbouring Guam, or Washington, for help with an ongoing electricity crisis.

The main island of Saipan is now down to less than half of its electricity generators.

The Northern Marianas has suffered rolling power outages for several months, because the generators owned by the government-run electricity company need maintenance.

The company has warned Saipan's hospital and airport can now lose power at any time.

Northern Marianas government spokesman Charles Reyes told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program, the territory may need to ask for outside help.

"I suppose we could appeal to the US monetary for assistance plus even the government of Guam," he said.

"We would be willing to call on them if we really faced a dire situation."
