Solomon Islands police have condemned an attack on a New Zealand police officer serving with the Regional Assistance Mission or RAMSI.

The RAMSI officer was attacked with a machete on Tuesday, when he was called to a fight outside a health clinic, at Avuavu in Guadalcanal.

He was flown to Honiara for treatment.

The acting Solomon Islands Police Commissioner, Johnson Siapu called the attack cowardly.

"It is sad that people are attacking them in this manner," he said.

"And we in the Solomon Islands police force and I believe the Solomon Islands government do condemn this kind of cowardly act.

"That is why we have launched these operations to try and catch the offenders in the area."
