In the United States Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has used her speech to the party's national convention to launch a blistering attack on Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama.

Michael Rowland reports from the convention floor in St Paul Minnesota that in her first major speech since being chosen as the Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, has talked up her small town roots and defended her record as Alaska's governor.

She also spoke about her family's ups and downs, a reference to her teenage daughter's pregnancy.

Governor Palin also took a several swipes at Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

"Listening to him speak it's easy to forget that this is a man who's authored two memoirs but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the state senate," she said.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain joined his running mate on stage, describing her as a good choice.
