In India, flood victims in relief camps are facing grim conditions with food running out and only dirty drinking water available.

The flooding of the Kosi river has left more than three million people homeless.

Aid workers and survivors in the flooded state of Bihar say rescue efforts have reached a critical stage.

They describe the conditions in relief camps as grim and say people are being forced to drink muddy water.

About 300,000 people are yet to be rescued and they've been stranded for more than two weeks.

Officials say those rescued in recent days are being found in pathetic conditions.

Bihar's disaster minister, Nitish Mishra, says urgent international aid is needed on the scale of the 2004 tsunami.
