Fiji's Methodists say they won't back down

Fiji's Methodist Church says it won't back down from its determination to convert non-Christians from the Indian community.

The Human Rights Commission of Fiji has warned the church that targetting its preaching to non-Christians might break the country's human rights laws, which guarantee freedom of religion.

But Fiji Methodist Church general Secretary, Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program the church is just obeying a command from God.

"The Indian community is the second-largest number within our population and most of them are Hindus and Muslims," he said.

"We proclaim the Christian gospel as mandated by the Lord, that He has given them the authority to go and to make disciples to all nations."
