The head of Australia's Defence Force has defended the decision to use a navy frigate to host the official launch of the Sydney Kings basketball season two years ago.

The Sydney Kings was a basketball team competing in Australia's National Basketball League.

HMAS Sydney was the venue for a party sponsored by the failed fuel-pill company FirePower, which Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston and other senior military officials had shares in.

FirePower laid claim to a super pill for petrol tanks which would reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent.

Air Chief Marsahll Houston has denied any conflict of interest and says it's not uncommon for defence equipment to be made available to the public.

"It helps our recruitment effort and you'll notice that from time to time we are very prominent at major events around the country, that's been going on for years. it's closely controlled, it's approved by the minister," he said.
