Third death at BHP Billiton prompts investigation calls

The Australian Workers Union wants a complete investigation of work safety culture on mine sites, after a second death at BHP Billiton's Yandi operations in Western Australia.

A 19-year-old man was killed on Thursday when a dump truck crushed his Toyota utility.

It's the third death at a BHP Billiton mine site in the last six weeks.

BHP Billiton has suspended its non-essential state wide iron ore operations until further notice.

The WA Branch Secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Stephen Price, says BHP's iron ore operations should remain shut down until a transparent investigation is completed.

" We're disgusted that this has occurred," he said.

"There needs to be a purpose for that shut down.

"We need a transparent audit process put in place of their safety procedures and also to include the safety culture that's on site."
