More than 40 lawmakers from Malaysia's ruling coalition are on their way to Taiwan on an educational tour.

The trip comes as top opposition leaders meet to plot their campaign to oust the government.

Malaysia's opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, who has vowed to unseat the government by 16 September, says it's an attempt to seclude government MPs from the high-stakes negotiations.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has called for a meeting of his Barisan Nasional coalition on Tuesday to try to deter any defections that could spell the end of its 50-year reign.

He has vowed to thwart Mr Anwar's plan to secure the 30 lawmakers he needs to form a new administration.
