The former Bangladeshi prime minister, Khaleda Zia, has been released Thursday after more than a year in custody in the emergency-ruled country.

Her release is part of an apparent deal with the emergency government and is predicted to ensure her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, stands in December elections aimed at restoring democracy.

Her lawyer says she will go directly to the grave of her husband, slain president Ziaur Rahman, before heading to the hospital where her ailing son Tareque Rahman is being treated.

Mr Rahman has been issued a British visa and could fly to London for treatment for a spinal injury as early as Thursday evening.
